It’s been messed up all season. High water. Turbidity city. And just recently throughout most of September, more high turbid water. But now it’s running clear and they turned the water off, quite literally. Good thing the Buffalo is flowing in.

This is what’s happened in the past month. Even as the water started to drop quickly in late September, it was horrible looking when I stopped by.

94 cfs?? I can’t remember ever seeing the discharge this low. From 1,200 a few weeks ago to this. But at least it’s clear and there’s some fish rising!

Piles of weeds cover the stream bed. I see a really good one rising down here, but can’t get it to eat the big winged beetle. But I’m getting my annual fall winged beetle fix. The forecast has Indian summer coming to an end in the next 48 hours. From sunny and mid-70s to cold rain or snow, with snow in Montana. Sure, it will probably trigger some blue wing olives, but there were quite a few hatching here this afternoon in bluebird conditions! In hindsight maybe I should have come straight here from the Missouri, but I just didn’t trust the water being clean.

Here’s the obligatory fall sunset color/reflection photo. Damn that water is low.

This evening I get a couple of these. What a pleasure to fish the big high-floating size 12!

I’m fishing tomorrow’s last warm day of the year, even with the likely wind. Maybe I’ll see a mahogany. Saturday looks to be cloudy and cooler, but not frigid yet. Maybe I’ll see more blue wings. Seems like a fitting place to usher in fall/winter. Then I’ll move south and lower in elevation.

It still has its charm, beauty, and mystique, despite all its problems.
